The United Nations has issued a stark warning as the number of displaced people worldwide reaches an all-time high. According to the UNHCR, over 123 million individuals have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict, political instability, or climate-related disasters. This figure marks a 9% increase from the previous year and reflects growing humanitarian challenges faced across multiple continents.
The largest increases have been reported in regions affected by ongoing conflicts, including Sudan, Syria, and parts of Central and West Africa. Additionally, climate events such as floods in Southeast Asia and droughts in the Horn of Africa have displaced millions more, further straining the resources of neighboring countries and aid organizations.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for global solidarity and more equitable sharing of responsibility. “No country should bear the burden alone,” he said during a press briefing. The UN is also appealing for increased funding to support relief efforts, many of which are currently under-resourced. Humanitarian agencies warn that without urgent international cooperation, conditions for refugees will continue to deteriorate.
